Lagori : History and Global Significance

Lagori, also known as “Seven Stones,” is a traditional Indian game cherished across the country and beyond. It has been played for over 5000 years, earning it a place not only in India’s cultural history but also in that of several Asian and Middle Eastern nations.

Historical References:

  • The game of Lagori has historical significance and is even associated with Lord Shree Krishna, who played it with his friends. References to Lagori can be found in various ancient texts, including “ShreeKrishna Mahatmya” (chapters 272 to 317) and “Shrikrishna Charitra” (page 659). It was also played during the time of the Mahabharata.
  • Lagori finds mention in many Abhanga (epic poems) and is linked to the teachings of Sant Eknath.
  • This traditional game has a place in Indian history through references to the Pandavas and King Peshwa.
International Recognition
  1.  India: Mentioned in the 1961 Census of India (Vol. 11, Part 6, Issue 37)

Learn the Rules, Hone Your Strategy, and Join the Action!

Step 1 : Setup

1. Place seven flat stones in a vertical stack.
2. Split into two teams: Attackers (hitters) and Defenders (fielders).

Step 2 : Knock Down

1. Attackers throw a ball to topple the stone stack.

Step 3 : Rebuild & Dodge

1. Attackers rush to rebuild the stack while defenders retrieve the ball.
2. Defenders aim to hit attackers below the waist to eliminate them.

Step 4 : Win Condition

1. Attackers win if they rebuild the stack. Defenders win if all attackers are eliminated.
